What are the Contraindications to Massage Treatment?

Massage treatment is non-invasive, relaxing and natural. It is therefore generally considered a safe treatment for most people. Our Practitioners at Orthopedic Massage Rehabilitation  Center have put the following Contraindication Restrictions in place to protect and prevent the spread of ours, yours, and other patient's health and well-being.

  • Contagious & Infectious Diseases: Fever, Cold, Flu, Vomiting, Diarrhea

  • Under the Influence of Blood Thinners, Narcotics, Illegal Drugs, or Alcohol.

  • Recent Operations or Acute Injuries

  • Neuritis

  • Skin Diseases

Local Contraindications (Area Must Be Avoided)

  • Varicose veins

  • Undiagnosed pain, lumps or bumps,

  • Bruising, Strain, Sprain, or Broken Bone

  • Open Cuts, Abrasions

  • Sunburns

Medical Contraindications (Physicians Consent Supervision Required)

  • Any Cardiovascular Conditions: Hypertension, High & Low Blood Pressure, Angina, Edema, Pacemakers, Thrombosis, phlebitis, and other heart conditions.

  • Currently Being Treated by a Medical Physician for Any Condition

  • Osteoporosis

  • Nervous or psychotic condition

  • Bell’s palsy, trapped or pinched nerves

Does a contraindication mean that treatment cannot take place?
Not always. In fact, massage can be very therapeutic for many medical conditions. However, in the above cases it is best to have advice from your physician. Massage therapists, unless they are also qualified doctors, may not, under law, attempt to diagnose a condition.
